Almost too fiery
to seem real, this image of the sun's surface was captured by NASA's
Solar Dynamics Observatory in August 2012. Shortly afterward, this
prominence on the sun's surface erupted, blasting solar particles toward
Earth. According to NASA, this eruption may have been the cause of a
temporary radiation belt that surrounded Earth last year.
